Santiago Etxea is a monumental site, located
at the mouth of the River Urola, between its protected marshes and the beach
on the Bay of Biscay, with the same name.
The Zuloaga collection is exhibited to the public in the Basque painter's
study, the gallery of his private collection
and the Hermitage on St. James' Way. These
places contain major works by Ignacio Zuloaga, together with works of art
that the painter gathered together throughout his life, such as Christ
on the Cross by El Greco (1500-1600),
by Goya, General
Palafox (1808) and the Countess of Baena
(1800) by Zurbarán, St.
Ursula, the portrait of Martínez de
la Rosa painted by Vicente López
in 1845, the panel by Luis Morales El Divino,
the Pietá from the mid-16th century,
along with other important carvings and panels. The collection also includes
sculptures by Rodin, The
Demon and the Flesh and a bust of Gustav
Mahler, and a cricified Christ by Julio Beobide,
a sculptor from Zumaia and a good friend of Zuloaga's.
